Which containers are included in scheme expansion?

From 1 July 2026, most beverage containers between 150ml and 3L will be accepted at refund points across Western Australia.

This includes:

  • All fruit and vegetable juice, flavoured milk, and cordial containers.

  • Wine in any container type.

  • Spirits.

  • Water in casks.

Plain milk and registered health tonic containers are not eligible for return. Please dispose of these containers in your residential recycling bin.

When can I return newly accepted containers?

From Wednesday 1 July 2026, when scheme expansion takes effect.

Why is Containers for Change expanding?

Scheme expansion will deliver better recycling outcomes and greater benefits for the WA community.

Since 2020, more than 5 billion 10¢ containers have been saved from general waste and recycled through Containers for Change. Over $500 million has been refunded to Western Australians, of that, $20 million has been donated to charities, schools, and community groups.

Scheme expansion will build on this by:

  • Increasing recycling rates.

  • Creating more jobs across the refund point network.

  • Supporting community fundraising.

My newly accepted container doesn't have the 10¢ mark?

From 1 July 2026, all newly accepted containers can be returned, even if they do not have the 10¢ mark. Beverage producers new to the Containers for Change have until 1 July 2029 to update product labels.

Will the new containers be accepted at all ways to return?

While most refund points accept all 10¢ containers, Self-serve Kiosks rely on barcodes and have size limits. Self-serve Kiosks may not accept containers without a registered barcode, or oversized containers that do not fit the chute.

Oversized containers include:

  • 2L and 3L wine casks.
  • 1L cordial bottles with a handle.
  • 2L and 3L fruit juice containers

If your 10¢ container isn't accepted at a Self-serve Kiosk, return it to a Depot, Drop & Go station, or via Containers for Change Collect.

What materials could contaminate my return?

Some ceramics that are no longer sold in WA can still end up in your return. This includes older style Cottee's cordial bottles and ceramic bottles used for spirits or wine.

These materials can contaminate the recycling process. Please keep these out of your returns.

Can I return corks with wine bottles?

Yes. Corks can be returned to our refund points.

Please remove them from bottles and return them separately to your other container lids.
