Broadwater Tourist Park raises $32,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation
A Gold Coast tourist park has turned recycling into a powerful act of kindness - raising an incredible $32,642 for the Leukaemia Foundation through Containers for Change.
It’s a cause close to home for Broadwater Tourist Park Manager, Brooke, whose father Paul was diagnosed with leukaemia back in 2002 and given just two weeks to live.
Brooke’s mum, Kim, suddenly found herself caring for four young children under the age of five while Paul underwent treatment.
During that time, the Leukaemia Foundation stepped in to help, providing accommodation near the hospital and vital support when the family needed it most.
More than two decades after Paul’s remarkable recovery, Broadwater Tourist Park, led by Brooke and her team, continues to give back - raising funds for the Foundation to support other families facing the same battle.
How they’re turning 10 cents into life-changing support
So, how does a holiday park raise tens of thousands of dollars from recycling? Through the green Containers for Change bins found throughout the park!
Over the past four years, guests at Broadwater Tourist Park have been encouraged to donate their 10-cent containers, with every refund going directly to the Leukaemia Foundation.
These small acts of recycling have added up to make a huge difference - supporting families facing the same challenges Brooke’s family once did.
Park Managers Brooke and Matt say their guests love being part of something that makes a real difference.
“Knowing their efforts contribute directly to the Leukaemia Foundation inspires them to participate, creating a feel-good moment when they donate their empty containers for a worthy cause”.
Making recycling easier for guests
To make it even simpler for visitors to get involved, the team plans to introduce caddy bins inside all 28 cabins.
This will allow guests to collect their containers during their stay and drop them off at the park’s main bin bays before they leave - making recycling even more convenient and rewarding.
It’s all part of the park’s ongoing effort to make sustainability easy and meaningful for everyone who visits.
The difference every container makes
The Leukaemia Foundation’s David Hancock said the donations from the park will make a real and lasting impact.
“Without Containers for Change, we wouldn’t be seeing this kind of money,” he said.
“These donations help us provide accommodation, financial assistance, and fund research and trials for patients facing blood cancer.”
Small actions, big impact
Broadwater Tourist Park’s Containers for Change initiative shows how every 10-cent container can make a real difference - turning simple recycling into life-changing support for people and the planet.
