Meet the Charity Winner of ‘Turn 10 cents into $10,000’: Bayside Salvation Army

Retirement may be in sight for the tireless washing machine at the Bayside Salvation Army in Redland City - thanks to one humble 10-cent container that led to an incredible $10,000 windfall.

The Bayside Salvation Army has officially been named the charity winner of Containers for Change’s Turn 10c into $10K competition.

This state-wide initiative drew over 36,000 entries and helped return more than 14 million containers for recycling across Queensland.

Turning 10 Cents into Real Impact

Between mid-May and 30 June 2025, Queenslanders had the chance to convert their recycling into serious rewards. It was simple:

  • Return at least 100 containers with a Containers for Change member number

  • Complete the online competition form

  • Each entry went into the draw - the more you recycled, the more chances to win!

Two winners were selected at random: one individual and one school, charity, or community group. Bayside Salvos proved the old saying right: you just have to be in it to win it.

One Entry. 860 Containers. One Life-Changing Call

Operations Manager Jodie Frazer only entered once - after dropping off 860 containers at the Cleveland depot on June 17.

“I did one entry and that was it,” Jodie said. “I thought ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve only done one’ - and we’ve won off one entry! I’m so excited.”

Meanwhile, Captain Natalie Frame was in the middle of a camping getaway when she got the news. “I was speechless,” she said.

Talk about a wild twist to your holiday itinerary!

How the $10,000 Prize Will Support the Community

Located in the Redlands, Bayside Salvation Army opens its doors four days a week, offering essential drop-in services for the community:

  • A cuppa, meal and friendly conversation

  • Connections to social support services

  • Laundry facilities for those in need

“We’re here to support our community however they need,” said Natalie.

The team has been participating in Containers for Change for years - routinely filling up bins with the help of staff, friends, and family and using the refunds to help support their services.

Now, the $10,000 prize will help them reach even further.

“We can use the funds to feed into our community services, but we are really looking for a new washing machine,” Ms Frame said.

“A lot of people are coming in with housing stress at the moment, sleeping rough, and our washing machine is fighting hard to keep up,” Natalie said.

“This will make a real difference.”
