FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

As of 1 July 2026, most drink containers between 150ml and 3L are accepted for return. This now includes Wine, Spirits, Large Juice and Cordial. You can find the full list, including accepted and ineligible containers here.

These containers won’t get you 10¢, so continue to do a great job of disposing of them in the relevant bin as per WasteSorted guidelines:

• All white dairy or white plant-based milk
• Food cans
• Registered health tonics

Accepted containers dropped into kerbside recycling bins are mechanically recovered by the kerbside recycling operators (Material Recovery Facilities) and sold to recyclers to live another life.

However, the refunds for these containers don’t go to you, or your local community group. They’re shared between the kerbside recycling operator and the local government area that the bin is collected from.

If you’d prefer the refund was sent straight to you, head to your local refund point and return your containers through Containers for Change.

Containers for Change is in the business of refunding your money — not charging you extra.

With that in mind — the costs of recycling containers is handled by beverage suppliers.

Every supplier gets to decide whether a percentage of the refund cost will (or won’t) be passed on to you, the consumer.

Suppliers may choose to factor the 10¢ refund for accepted containers into their pricing. If you’d like to know more, please contact the relevant supplier directly.

We accept most plastic and glass bottles, cans and drink cartons between 150ml and 3L. Just look for the 10¢ mark on the container*.

You can also use our handy barcode-checker on our website, or use the barcode scanner on our app, to see if your container can be returned.

*Every state and territory in Australia runs its own container deposit scheme, as a result, you may sometimes try to return a container with the 10¢ mark but find it’s not yet accepted at one of WA’s Containers for Change refund points. Don’t be disheartened – please recycle the container in the relevant bin, as per WasteSorted guidelines, instead.

In most instances, yes. As long as the refund point operator can tell whether your container’s accepted, your container can be returned.

Even if it’s crushed, even if it's missing a label, as long as it’s empty and a whole container (we don’t do things in halves), then your container can be returned.

However, if you’re returning your containers at a Self-serve Kiosk or at some Self-serve Depots, just make sure you can still read the container's barcode. It has to be scannable for the machine to give you your refund.

We want to make sure our processes align with evolving recycling practices, world-wide. After assessing our operational considerations and talking to our recycling and logistics partners, we have decided that leaving lids on containers presents minimal risk to processing, whilst also improving convenience for our customers. 

You will be able to return your containers with lids on, from Tuesday 1 July 2025.

Yes! We still accept loose 10¢ containers lids at our refund points. Lids will continue to be recycled as per usual. 

It's up to you! We will accept bottles with lids on (as long as they're empty), and we will also accept bottles with lids removed. If you do remove your lids, remember to bring them with you to the refund point and use the lid bins provided - we'll recycle loose lids, too.
