How do I donate my containers?

There's more than one way to donate your containers, you can:

1. Donate through your personal member number at a refund point

With member number, you can keep track of every container you return, even the ones you donate to a charity or community group. Here's how:

  • Log in to your member portal.
  • Scroll down to Payment Methods and press edit.
  • You’ll need to input a code (we like to make sure your payment details are nice and secure).
  • Select ‘A good cause’ and search the cause you'd like to donate your refund too.
  • Tick the box to 'set them as your charity' and press done.
  • Tick the box to 'set it as your preferred payment method'.

All done! Every time you use your member number, your refund goes to the cause you selected and your returned 10¢ containers are recorded in your personal member account. You can change your payment preferences any time in your member portal.

2. Make an anonymous donation at a refund point

You can also donate to a charity or community group by quoting their member number at a refund point. Simply quote your cause's member number and the refund will be deposited to your selected cause's bank account. These containers will not be tracked in your personal member number, so we do recommend using your personal member number to donate.

3. Donating your containers physically by dropping them off at a donation point.

You might know of a local sports club, community group, school or church collecting containers physically. By dropping off your containers, you're helping that organisation reach their fundraising goal.

Can I claim a tax deduction when I donate my containers?

We leave tax to the pros!

Please contact the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) about claims and deductions.

You can find the ATO’s contact details on their website.

Why should I donate my containers?

As at February 2025, over $14 million has been donated to community organisations, schools and charities through Containers for Change. We’re talking local sports teams, Men’s Sheds and disaster relief—just to name a few.

If you’re not that fussed about the 10¢ refund on your container, that’s okay. Let a local charity or community group take your containers off your hands, return them and benefit hugely from the refunds.

Is “returning” different from “donating”?

When you return your containers to a refund point, you can choose to get the refund right into your pocket (or your bank account), or donate your containers and contribute directly to raising funds for your local school, club, team, group, charity or initiative.

Will I get a receipt when I donate my containers?

Absolutely! If you donate through your personal member number, no matter how you return, you'll receive a receipt via email. You can choose to donate through your personal member number by updating your payment preferences on your member number account.
